Seems like we can’t even grab a coffee without the barista asking us about Tidal – the new streaming service launched yesterday by Jay Z, Beyonce, Rihanna, Kanye West, Jack White, Arcade Fire, Usher, Nicki Minaj, Coldplay, Alicia Keys, Calvin Harris, Daft Punk, deadmau5, Jason Aldean, J. Cole and Madonna.
Whether you were confused by what the artists were signing or were stoked to see your favorite artist make a move we always return to one thing at Merchbar – the Data.
So we took a step back, did a quick audit and picked out some of the most interesting numbers from the new juggernaut alliance.
No matter what you think of their music, once you look at the data, it is hard to argue that this isn’t a tremendously successful, influential and lucrative group of musicians that yield considerable power individually. It will be very interesting to see what they do together.
Want a bit more detail? Here’s the spreadsheet we used with all the raw data.
Where possible we used verified data from either the services for themselves or reliable third party auditors. In all cases where we estimated numbers we used low assumptions on adoption. I great example of this is ticket sales for Calvin Harris and Deadmau5. Both are massive musicians but because they typically play clubs or festivals there isn’t a reliable third party tracking of their sales. Their true numbers are likely much MUCH higher.
