The 1960’s and 1970’s were times that gave birth to many legendary musical acts. It was a time where epic guitar solos, technical drum fills, and funky bass lines reigned supreme and rock stars were revered as larger than life legends. One of the bands that arose from this period ended up being one of the greatest musical acts this world has ever known. That group would forever be known as Led Zeppelin.
Founded in 1968, Led Zeppelin consisted of four amazingly talented musicians: Front man and sex icon Robert Plant, guitar virtuoso Jimmy Page, the god father of rock n’ roll drumming John Bonham, and bassist John Paul Jones. Led Zeppelin gained huge critical acclaim as well as a fan base in every part of the world. Having sold over 300 million records worldwide, Led Zeppelin is now considered one of the greatest and most influential bands to have ever lived. It’s no wonder then, that the logo used to represent the band is so widely recognized.
The History of the Led Zeppelin Logo
The logo for Led Zeppelin also happens to be one of the most recognizable logos in rock n’ roll culture. Whether it be worn on a t-shirt or on a vintage touring poster hung on a wall, the logo has distinguishable features that allow it to stand out from the crowd. The design for the logo consists of the band’s name “Led Zeppelin” in white lettering on a solid black background. The logo was designed in 1973 by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis, originally intended to be used as part of the cover art for the album Houses of the Holy. It was instead widely accepted as the logo for the band, and since then it has been printed on countless Led Zeppelin posters and Led Zeppelin shirts for fans to use to show their dedication to the band.
The Led Zeppelin Logo Font
The Led Zeppelin logo may look simple, but that’s just part of its elegant aesthetic. The font itself is actually a hand-drawn typeface instead of a preprogrammed font type. Each letter is disproportionate and misshaped, giving it a more experimental feel. The artists tried to capture the band’s psychedelic, experimental musicianship within the logo. The white letters are filled in with black, so that you can only see the outline of the letters. This allows you to see every detail in the letters’ shape to fully get the desired effect.
The Led Zeppelin Logo’s Enduring Legacy
Led Zeppelin is a band that will be remembered until the end of time. The things that they were able to accomplish and the musicianship that the members possessed has placed the band into the record books as one of the greatest bands of all time. The Led Zeppelin logo is something that reminds the world of that greatness, which in turn makes the logo timeless. Led Zeppelin will never go out of style, and neither with the logo that represents them.
