Lateralus is the third studio album by American rock band Tool. Led by vocalist Maynard James Keenan, the group’s lineup includes drummer Danny Carey, guitarist Adam Jones, and bassist Justin Chancellor. The band is known for its protest against censorship in the music industry.
The album defied industry standards and moved the band into progressive rock territory. It had ten tracks and a 79-minute run time of complex and long songs, along with a ten-and-a-half minute music video for“Parabola.” Rolling Stone said of the album that“Drums, bass and guitars move in jarring cycles of hyper howl and near-silent death march.” None of this deterred fans, who bought 555,220 albums in the first week it released in 2001, earning Lateralusthe top spot on the Billboard charts. Tool won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for the album’s song“Schism” in 2002.
