Metallica took an eight year hiatus — the longest in their career — before releasing their 10th studio album Hardwired… to Self-Destruct in 2016. The band proved they were still the biggest dogs in the junkyard even 30 years after their debut album Kill‘Em All, releasing their sixth No. 1 album in a row, going platinum for the 10th time. Yes, all 10 of Metallica’s studio album are platinum certified, an amazing legacy through three decades of music.
“Now That We’re Dead” was released as a single off the album, a love song with twist from Metallica. The lyrics tell the story of a tragic love, told from the point of view of a lover left behind after their partner passes away. Metallica frontman James Hetfield compared it to the telling of a modern-day Romeo and Juliet, with the chorus —“now that we’re dead, my dear, we can be together” — building around the concept of forlorn love. The protagonist knows death is coming and embraces it, finally able to find love again and“live forever” with their partner.
