Browning began in Evanston, Illinois when Josh Augsburger met Mike Froelich in 2000. They met through mutual friends and soon learned that both had a love for playing music. It was a tough start; Josh and Mike played together off and on for quite some time before they finally figured out how to play music with each other. Nevertheless, they stuck with it. Soon, the first incarnation of Browning was formed and they went by the name of The Doug Browning Band. The Doug Browning Band played mostly acoustic music heavily influenced by bluegrass and alt country. Although they never played out, the collection of recorded songs grew and grew. Around 2004 Josh moved away from Evanston and purchased a house in Lake County. Mike also moved away from Evanston and ended up in McHenry County. Still living relatively close, Mike and Josh were determined to continue with The Doug Browning Band one way or another. Shortly after moving into his new neighborhood, Josh met up with his new neighbor Zip (Gary Zipfel). Zip invited Josh to The Shed--Zip's open jam in his killer basement studio. After seeing Zip's studio and hearing his bass playing, Josh knew Mike had to be brought to the next Shed jam. Josh, Mike and Zip played with various musicians at The Shed for a few months. Finally, Mike voiced what everyone else was thinking; "l don't want to play these silly covers. Let's start an original band." Zip, Josh and Mike did just that. They played together most Tuesday nights figuring out how to integrate each other's styles into their own. Slowly but surely, songs formed, styles gelled, and Browning was born. The guys in the band were not quite happy with the sound yet. The trio sounded good but it was kind of thin. They felt that they needed something more. Although Mike played guitar in most of the Doug Browning years, he had played drums almost exclusively with the electric band, Browning. Wanting to get out from behind the kit, Browning found itself in the market for a new drummer. Enter Mike Wolfgram--the band called him 'Wolfie,' much to his dismay. Wolfie came to the band with very different set of influences. Nevertheless, the guys in the band persisted and brought him into the fold. Air-drumable parts combined with the catchy lyrics and folky rhythms to form a new dynamic that you hear today. After years of honing their skill as songwriters and musicians, the band decided to get serious about releasing some original music. The debut album 'Offsite' was recorded in 2011- 2012 at the offsite location in Iron County Wisconsin. The guys like to go to the remote location to enhance their focus on the creative process, and to catch some fish.
