With their 10-time platinum hit record Pyromania, English heavy metal band Def Leppard found themselves riding the waves of mainstream radio success with hit songs“Photograph” and“Rock of Ages”—whose lyrics give the album its fiery title. The last record Def Leppard recorded before drummer Rick Allen tragically lost his left arm in a car accident, Pyromaniastands as a pinnacle example of the glorious‘80s glam rock era.
The album’s artwork was designed by legendary British graphic designer Andie Airfix, who also created covers for other heavy metal bands like Black Sabbath, Guns N’ Roses, Judas Priest, and Metallica. Directed to come up with a cover that didn’t rely on established metal clichés, Airfix“tried to envisage what would constitute an attack on our materialistic world that would be totally unacceptable,” and commissioned illustrator Bernard Gudynas to capture the striking image.
