Released in 1988, Metallica’s …And Justice for All stands apart in the band’s catalog, featuring songs with an average length well over six minutes, and more complex arrangements than their earlier records. It was also the band’s first album to feature bassist Jason Newsted, who replaced Cliff Burton after his death in 1986. The album single “One,” would become a staple of Metallica’s live performances, while “Harvester of Sorrow” and “Eye of the Beholder” would also find airtime.
From James Hetfield’s guttural vocals to Kirk Hammett’s soaring guitar licks, …And Justice for All paved the way for Metallica’s mainstream breakout success three years later, with their self-titled “Black” album, perching them atop the “big four” of thrash metal (Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer) throughout the ‘90s.
