Metallica’s “Ride The Lightning” is undoubtedly one of the most iconic songs of all-time. The instant the guitar riff begins wailing, you know your eardrums are about to be melted. By the time it’s over, you might look exactly like the famous “Feel The Flames” Electrocuted Skeleton and need a new pair of headphones. It’s that good and that explosive.
The lyrics of “Ride The Lightning” tell the thoughts of a man moments away from execution by electric chair, the band drawing inspiration for the title from a quote in Stephen King’s The Stand that caught drummer Lars Ulrich’s eye. The chorus is the moment the lightning strikes the prisoner (“Flash before my eyes”), noting that he “can feel the flame.” The electric chair was supposed to be a quick death, but it’s actually known to be incredibly painful, hence he “can feel the flame.” It’s safe to say Metallica nailed this one.
