Bob Marley is a musical legend. Born and raised in Jamaica, he pioneered the reggae sound and brought it to the mainstream. In 1965, his group Bob Marley and the Wailers released its debut album The Wailing Wailers. The album included the hit single“One Love” which was immensely popular, peaking at No. 5 on worldwide music charts. His lyrics were both spiritual and socially aware, touching on the wrongs of slavery and poverty. He considered cannabis to be a healing herb and a sacrament and supported making the drug legal.
In the late 1960s, Marley converted to Rastafarianism, originally from impoverished Afro-Jamaican communities as a reaction against British colonial culture. Ironically, Marley moved to London permanently after surviving an assassination attempt in his home in Jamaica. But he never forgot his roots.“One good thing about music, when it hits you feel no pain” is a lyric from his song“Trenchtown Rock.” The song is an homage to Marley’s home in Trenchtown, Jamaica. Marley returned to Jamaica shortly before his death from cancer in 1981.
