English rock band Deep Purple formed in 1968 and are considered to be pioneers of the hard rock and heavy metal scenes. Along with Zeppelin and Sabbath, Deep Purple are considered part of the"unholy trinity" of British heavy metal.
Their 1970 album, Deep Purple in Rock, includes the single"Speed King," which borrowed lyrics straight out of famed oldies by Elvis Presley, Little Richard, and Chuck Berry. This combination of old-school lyrics with Purple's unique rock-and-roll sound has led the song to remain a popular hit, especially at live events.
