Tie Dye Grateful Dead Shirt
The Grateful Dead’s“Lightning Skull” logo had its origins in a far more practical need: branding their gear cases when they were on tour. Designed by Owsley Smith and Bob Thomas, the iconic emblem first appeared on an earlier live album, History of the Grateful Dead, Volume One(Bear's Choice), but took true prominence on the cover of their 1973 live album Steal Your Face.
Seemingly lost to time after the collapse of Grateful Dead Records, it wouldn’t be until 1989 that Steal Your Face would be made available on CD for reappraisal. While Steal Your Face was originally released to mixed reviews, featuring fewer of the band’s long jams in favors of shorter, snappier tracks, but opinions have risen over time - absolutely aided by modern techniques of sonic reconstruction to polish some of the live-recorded tracks’ rougher edges.
