Desperate Straights came about in 1974 when two very different groups, Slapp Happy and Henry Cow, got drunk over Bacardi one night, and decided on a merger. The album sports a staggeringly effective sequence of short songs, by turns witty, twisted, epic and apocalyptic. An obsessive song about hats, a mini-symphony on Europe, a Brechtian reflection on the faults of the other songs on the album , Peter Blegvad singing about how he's "Gone astray", to the accompaniment of Hawaiian guitarsThis is a new, unopened CD in its original packaging.
