Nirvana was an American rock band from Aberdeen, Washington in 1987. It was founded by Kurt Cobain(guitarist) and Krist Novoselic(bassist) in which Dave Grohl(more commonly known for being the lead vocalist of the Foo Fighters) joined. The band dissolved in 1994 after the death of Cobain, but not before their music became popular and influential. As a part of the Seattle grunge scene, they found unexpected success with“Smells Like Teen Spirit,” the first single from their landmark second album Nevermind(1991).
Cobain soon found himself as the“spokesman of a generation” and Nirvana was the“flagship band” of Generation X. Two years later the band released In Utero(1993), which gave Nirvana further chart success and has sold over 15 million copies worldwide. The band disbanded following the death of Cobain in 1994. Nirvana’s success did not end, however. There have been various posthumous releases including MTV Unplugged in New York(1994) which on the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 1996. They are considered one of the best-selling bands of all time with over 75 million records sold worldwide. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility in 2014.
