Born in 1967, Kurt Cobain found fame as the lead singer and lyricist of seminal rock band Nirvana. To this day, Cobain is considered one of the pioneering voices of the alternative-rock and grunge scenes. Called"the spokesman of a generation" by RollingStone, Cobain's music captured his struggles with depression and general disillusion with the world around him.
Cobain formed the band Nirvana in 1987 and the Washington-based band soon found a home within Seattle's growing grunge scene. The band found mainstream fame after their song"Smells Like Teen Spirit" - an apathetic pop music parody - found acclaim on pop radio. Cobain considered his smash-hit status and place as a generational voice as a misunderstanding of his artistic intentions, but he is still considered an icon of grunge, even decades after his passing in 1994.
