Pink Floyd formed in Cambridge, England in 1965 and is regarded as one of the greatest bands in rock and roll history. The progressive band got its start by performing covers of American R&B songs, and it was vocalist Syd Barrett who moved the group into psychedelic rock. Surreal lyrics and experimental keyboard sound mark the signature sound of Pink Floyd, with its 1967 debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. The band released its epic rock opera album The Wall in 1979, spending 15 weeks at No. 1 on the U.S. charts.
Pink Floyd has won multiple Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. The Back Catalogue photo was commissioned that year as a cheeky way to advertise the band’s“back catalog” of albums. Cover art was painted on the backs of six naked women: Atom Heart Mother(1970), Relics(1971), Dark Side of the Moon(1973), Wish You Were Here(1975), The Wall(1979), and Animals(1977).
