Formed in London in 1965, Pink Floyd gained a following as a psychedelic band, distinguished for their extended compositions, sonic experimentation, philosophical lyrics, and elaborate live shows. They became a leading band of the progressive rock genre and are one of the most commercially successful and influential groups in popular music history. They were inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. By 2013, they had sold more than 250 million records worldwide.
The Dark Side of the Moon was one of the best-selling records of all time. The concept album explored conflict, greed, time, death, and mental illness. The artwork was created by Pink Floyd’s associate, George Hardie. The band had a choice of seven designs, but all four members agreed that the prism was by far the best. The final design depicts a glass prism dispersing light into color. The design represents three elements: the band’s stage lighting, the album lyrics, and the request for a“simple and bold” design.
