In 1970, the remaining members of the band Smile were in crisis - they needed a new lead singer. Luckily, band members Brian May and Tim Staffell had a friend who was interested in taking over: Farrokh Bulsara, better known worldwide as Freddie Mercury. A year later, the rechristened Queen added bassist John Deacon and locked a legendary line-up in place.
Mercury encouraged the group to expand their sound - and also designed their logo himself. Not only did he craft the iconic"Queen" logo with a crown in the Q, he also designed a royal crest featuring the Zodiac signs of the bandmates. The band's fifteenth and final album, 1995's Made in Heaven, was expressly designed as a tribute to Mercury, with the cover featuring a photo of Mercury's Lake Geneva monument - fist raised defiantly to the sky.
