Palm Desert, California takes up only 27 square miles, but as of 1996 it was home to the American rock band Queens of the Stone Age. Formed after the dissolution of lead vocalist Josh Homme’s previous band, Kyuss, the group developed a style of riff-oriented, heavy rock music. As time and music has progressed, the band has incorporated a variety of different styles and influences. They have collaborated with Screaming Trees front man Mark Lanegan and Foo Fighters and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl.
Throughout its career, Queens of the Stone Age have been described as alternative rock, stoner rock, alternative metal, and hard rock. Rolling Stone magazine noted a“connection between American meat-and-potatoes macho rock of the early 1970s, like Blue Cheer and Grand Funk Railroad, and the precision-timing drones in German rock of the same period.
