While The Beatles’ "Let it Be" was released shortly after the band’s break-up was announced, it is technically not the last studio album they recorded—that honor belongs to 1969’s Abbey Road. Due to production issues with the record, which saw Phil Spector come in at the last minute to add his “Wall of Sound” to the mixes, "Let it Be" sits awkwardly in the pioneering rock band’s catalog. It was released simultaneously with the film of the same name, and which includes footage of their impromptu final public performance on top of the roof of Apple Records. Paul McCartney would later spearhead a stripped-down edition of the record called "Let It Be…Naked" in 2003.
Despite the album’s complicated genesis, it still contains some of the Liverpudlians —and for that matter, rock and roll’s—finest tunes. It’s almost impossible to look at any Beatles’ record and identify the stand-out tracks, usually because they’re all now considered classics, but "Let it Be"’s title track, as well as “Across the Universe,” “The Long and Wind Road,” and “Get Back,” all hold a special place in Beatles’ fans hearts. There’s no Ringo song on this one, but there are two from The Quiet One.
