Designed by Ezra-Lloyd Jackson and myself, this t-shirt features a lyric of mine which I wrote when I was 18 in my song “Power”. The design was inspired by all my favourite Black female jazz singers and Curtis Mayfield’s artwork. The font for ‘Melanin’ is inspired by Nina Simone, “is” is a reference to Billie Holiday, “not” is from Curtis Mayfield’s cover art, “your” is another Billie reference and “enemy” is from the lady herself Ella Fitzgerald.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again - I would not be the musician I am without these women. Their bravery, talent and unapologetic natures have influenced my music and myself profusely and if there is a time to pay homage to them - it is now.
