2013 remastered LP reissue on 180-gram vinyl. By 1966 it was pretty rare for a straight jazz instrumental to break through the British Invasion and chart a hit anywhere near the Billboard Top 10, but the title track of "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy!" drove all the way to number #11. Alto-sax man Cannonball Adderley's exuberance led it there with swingin' joy and it earned him a Grammy! Quintet band members contributed a lot to the album's success. Nat Adderley was at the coronet, Joe Zawinul hits his stride on piano, Roy McCurdy pounded the skins and Victor Gaskin played bass. The album title was a little misleading as Cannonball wanted to give a buddy in Chicago free advertising for his joint called "The Club." However, legendary producer David Axelrod wanted a cleaner sound. Axelrod, instead, built a bar setting in the studio at Capitol Records, invited special guests and piled them with free drinks. The end result was the atmosphere Adderley wanted (along with helping out his pal) and the cleaner-for-the-radio sound Axelrod wanted to produce a hit. This album is also noted as one of Cannonball's best recordings of his song "Sticks." The remastered special addition sounds even better on 180-gram vinyl. Capitol Records.
