While working on a solo project with musician producer Ben Gmetro (The Dreadful Yawns, New Planet Trampoline), Charles stumbled on an unlikely new direction. A one-off country song caught the ear of Gmetro, who quickly convinced Charles to scrap his other songs and record a different album. Ben recruited musicians from the Cleveland Country Band, one of his former projects to flesh out the music. Veteran pedal steel player Al Moss provided the final touch of authenticity. Not content with a one-off session, the band began playing local gigs. It quickly became clear to musicians and audiences alike that this was much more than a gimmick. The band was creating pure country music with heart, soul, and craft. That sound and feeling pours from the grooves of Shootin' Man. "The mail goal is to remind people of what country music is supposed to sound like," Charles says.
