The cellist Elinor Frey's impressive 2008 debut release with pianist David Fung is re-issued on analog vinyl, the better to appreciate the compelling program that includes solo and duo works that include the declamatory opening suite in Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suites, Lutoslawski's 'Grave' a 12 tone homage to a friend and Steven Stucky's title track, dedicated to Frey by utilizing a Renaissance era compositional technique soggetto cavato, or "carved subject" that honored friends or patrons by incorporating their names into the fabric of the music. Thus, the musical theme is the first six letters of Frey's name, transposed into notes and a further cementing of the dialogue nature of this remarkable release.
