The people at Funky Planet passed by a dark and dusty back-street club in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, and stopped, tempted by some enchanting music and powerful, raspy voice screaming out the pain of the world: California dreamin' on such a winter's day... When The Mamas & The Papas sang this in a sweet folk style, it was a light and joyful anthem in 1966, like a call to love. Lee Moses's version is more of a desperate cry for sunshine and freedom. And it goes on this way. His voice has this special quality, communicating pain, but also determination and sheer joy of life. His 1971 album Time and Place is a steady groover with a steaming hot band and a divine brass section. These devoted players build up a massive wall of groove and melody on which Lee Moses unleashes his voice like a volcanic eruption. The groove itself stays quite relaxed but definitely hypnotizing throughout the whole album and clears up your mind for the message of love Lee Moses raves about. The backing band's skills are further showcased in this edition's 14 bonus tracks, which include a steaming instrumental version of the Four Tops' Reach Out I'll Be There (from an early 7) and a cover of The Beatles' Day Tripper. The original album delivers classic soul anthems that should actually be worshipped by lovers of the late 1960s Motown sound.
