Born out of New York’s waning‘80s hardcore scene, in the wake of bands like Cro-Mags and Agnostic Front, Brooklyn’s Biohazard were most notable for being on the vanguard of fusing hardcore punk, heavy metal, and hip-hop. Guitarist Bobby Hambrel’s chugging riffs, along with Billy Graziadei’s guttural rants, grounded the thrash quartet’s genre bonafides while also allowing them to experiment with a proto-rap rock delivery—imagine an incredibly angry License to Ill and that’s 1992’s Urban Discipline.
After the success of that album’s video single,“Punishment,” Biohazard’s branched further into hip-hop on their 1994 follow-up, State of the World Address, which featured Cypress Hill’s Sen Dog on the track“How It Is.” Despite breaking up in 2006, Biohazard reformed in 2008 and has performed with various line-ups off and on since.
