Released in 1973, Sabbath Bloody Sabbathwas the British heavy metal rockers’ fifth record. After touring the world promoting Vol. 4throughout 1972 and’73, Black Sabbath started recording the follow-up in a Bel Air mansion in Los Angeles, but quickly moved the production to Clearwell Castle in Gloucestershire, England. Led Zeppelin showed up during the recording session at one point, but whatever songs the two titans played were never released.
For the album’s cover, Drew Struzan, who also created the artwork for Alice Cooper’s Welcome to My Nightmare, was commissioned to paint“an evil man and a good man both at the split second of their death.” It has remained one of Ozzy Osbourne’s favorite Black Sabbath covers.
