After touring the world promoting Vol. 4throughout 1972 and’73, Black Sabbath hit a brief creative standstill. Recording for their fifth album, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, would start in a Bel Air mansion in Los Angeles, but wouldn’t pick up steam until the band moved into Clearwell Castle in Gloucestershire, England.
Rehearsing in the castle’s dungeons inspired Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi into the opening riff of the album’s namesake track,“Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.” Those riffs would go on to inspire heavy metal guitarists like Slash and Mastodon’s Brent Hinds. The album’s artwork, typically macabre, was created by Drew Struzan and depicts“an evil man and a good man both at the split second of their death.”
