Black Sabbath are gods of rock and roll. Credited with birthing the heavy metal genre, Black Sabbath was formed in Birmingham, England in 1968 by vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, drummer Bill Ward, bassist Tony Iommi, and bassist Geezer Butler. With their riff-based songs, demonic lyrics and extreme volume, Black Sabbath took the world by storm. Butler actually dabbled in the dark arts until he saw what he thought was a figure from Hell at the foot of his bed. With lyrics by Osbourne, he composed a song about the visitation, calling it“Black Sabbath” after the 1963 Boris Karloff film.
The band had a taste for the theatrical. During a January 20, 1982 concert, frontman Osbourne jammed a bat in his mouth and bit its head off on stage. After the show, he went to a local hospital for rabies shots, but he didn’t stop there. Osbourne later bit the heads off of three live doves during a meeting with CBS Records executives. The cover art for Vol. 4 features a monochrome photo of Osbourne throwing the peace sign with his hands raised.
