Sweden’s gothic heavy metal band, Ghost, is made up of eight “Nameless Ghouls” and is led by a character called Papa Emeritus/Cardinal Copia who writes songs about Satan and often performs in a parody of Catholic vestments. For all of that stage eccentricity though, the band’s pop-leaning metal motifs have earned them international acclaim, including a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for the single “Cirice” from their third studio album, Meliora.

While the identities of the other band members have been obscured by masks and noms de plume, it’s been revealed that Tobias Forge, of the Swedish bands Subvision and Repugnant, has been pulling the strings all along. His penchant for dulcet toned melodies paired with chugging, doom-inflected riffs has been a recipe for the band’s success so far.
