Metallica’s 1983 debut album Kill ‘Em All is filled with classic thrash anthems like “Seek & Destroy,” “Whiplash,” and “Jump in the Fire.” The significance of the epic “The Four Horsemen” runs deep into the roots of metal, a track that was written by former Metallica lead guitarist Dave Mustaine before he was released. James Hetfield re-wrote the lyrics of the song to tell the apocalyptic story of the four horsemen, added the iconic bridge and guitar solo, and it’s history from there.
The track has become one of Metallica’s most famous songs, so much so that Revolver magazine used the track as inspiration for their “Big 4” metal magazine cover in 2011. The design, featuring the four horsemen of the apocalypse Metallica included in the song (Time, Famine, Pestilence and Death), was so impressive that Hetfield bought the illustration originally created by Baroness frontman John Dyer Baizley so Metallica could license the artwork. Now, it’s a fan favorite piece of Metallica art, with an awesome backstory that dives into the early days of one of the greatest band ever.
