Helping to usher in the mainstream popularity of grunge, Seattle’s Pearl Jam was launched into the stratosphere with their debut album Ten(1991). The record’s third single—after“Alive” and“Even Flow”—was the controversially received“Jeremy,” about a student who commits suicide in a classroom. The single, which featured this photograph and the B-sides“Yellow Ledbetter” and“Footsteps,” was only released internationally at first. However, the band’s music video quickly became a staple on MTV.
Despite receiving critical acclaim for the video, and several MTV Video Awards,“Jeremy” would be the last music video Pearl Jam released until 1998’s animated“Do the Evolution.” Bassist Jeff Ament was quoted as saying,“Ten years from now I don't want people to remember our songs as videos.”
