German rock band Scorpions nearly had a different lead singer on their eighth album, Blackout. After a vocal cord surgery on lead singer Klaus Meine, demos for the album were recorded with Don Dokken on vocals. But Meine's voice healed in time and Blackout arrived in 1982 with him singing on every track.
The screaming face that graces Blackout's cover is a self-portrait of artist Gottfried Helnwein. In a unique blast of serendipity, Helwein's work in self-portraiture has regularly included bandages and surgical tools - part of an ongoing analysis of portraiture and the concept of the doppelgänger. It turns out that German self-expressionism can rock too.
