Marshall Bruce Mathers III, known on stage as Eminem, was born in 1972 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He had a difficult upbringing – Eminem’s father left when he was young. His mother moved the family between Missouri and Michigan frequently, rarely staying in one place for more than a year and staying with other family members.
At age 14, Eminem began rapping at open-mic contests at the Hip Hop Shop on West 7 Mile in Detroit. Though he struggled at first to succeed in a primarily black industry, Eminem gained a following. By 1997 he had taken on the alter-ego Slim Shady, a sadistic, violent character that let him express his anger. Eminem was soon discovered by music producer and rapper Dr. Dre, who was so blown away by his talent that he signed him to his label. After that, Eminem’s career took off and he never looked back. He is widely considered one of the greatest hip hop artists of all time.
