A song Bob Dylan claimed he wrote in 10 minutes has created an everlasting imprint on our culture. That song is “Blowin’ in the Wind”. Written in 1962 and released on Dylan’s album The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan in 1963, it has often been described as a protest song as well as an anthem for the civil rights movement. With references to cannonballs and doves, it isn’t hard to see why. It is Dylan’s most covered song and has been recorded by hundreds of artists, among them, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, and Dolly Parton. While the lyrics are ambivalent in nature, it is part of the song’s appeal—it can mean anything to anyone. “Blowin’ in the Wind” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1994 and a decade later was ranked No. 14 on Rolling Stone’s list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
