Opened in 1973 by Hilly Kristal in Manhattan’s East Village, CBGB was a famed venue for punk rock and new wave bands. The venue was originally opened as a venue for a different style of music as CBGB stands for“Country, BlueGrass, and Blues.” Despite this, the location became the stage for bands like the Ramones, Television, Patti Smith Group, Blondie, and Talking Heads. From the 1980s onward, CBGB was known for hardcore punk. The venue was so successful they opened up a shop next door called the“CBGB Record Canteen,” a record shop and cafe.
CBGB continued to showcase mainly hardcore punk, post-punk, metal, and alternative rock until early 2000 when a protracted dispute over unpaid rent amounts closed the club. The final concert was played by Patti Smith on October 15, 2006. Despite the closing, CBGB still lives on iHeartRadio, launching its own channel, as well as hosting its own music festivals.
