Cheap Trick's first, self-titled album was released in 1977 to light sales and limited success. Later that same year, they released In Color, which was met with a similarly dim response. But the critical acclaim that Cheap Trick had received allowed them to take on a world tour in 1978.
It was during the April shows of Cheap Trick's 1978 World Tour that they found success in Japan, with audience response described as on par with Beatlemania. While in Japan, Cheap Trick recorded two of their live shows for what became their breakout live album, Cheap Trick at Budokan.
