One of rock and roll’s most famous riffs comes from Deep Purple’s 1972 album, Machine Head—and if you’ve ever played guitar, you’ve probably tried to learn it. While Ritchie Blackmore’s riff for “Smoke on the Water” is remarkably timeless, the true story behind the song is equally as epic.

While Deep Purple was holing up in Switzerland’s Montreaux Casino, set to record their sixth studio album, a flare gun accident at a Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention concert burned the entire complex down and forced the band to find a new venue for their Machine Head sessions.  Meanwhile, vocalist Ian Gillian was inspired by the fiasco and start putting lyrics to the title bassist Roger Glover gave him—“Smoke on the Water.”
