With a title referring to Kierkegaard, Either/Or was the third solo album released by singer/songwriter Elliot Smith. Recorded primarily in Portland, Oregon while Smith was still a member of the band Heatmiser, Either/Or allowed Smith to experiment with different styles seen in other albums like Elliot Smith, XO, and Roman Candle.
While the album has never charted, it remains Elliot Smith's best-selling solo album. Three of the tracks -"Say Yes,""Between the Bars," and"Angeles" were incorporated into the film Good Will Hunting by director Gus Van Sant. Smith also recorded a new track,"Miss Misery," which also appeared in the film - and in a live-televised performance at the 1998 Academy Awards.
