When Frank Zappa took over as the lead singer and guitarist of the R&B group, The Soul Giants, he made a few changes. First, the group agreed to perform new material that moved the group's sound into an experimental space. Second: he remained the group"The Mothers," but was told they needed a more specific name. Eventually, necessity birthed"The Mothers of Invention."
Their 1966 debut album, Freak Out!, featured an eclectic mix of rock, jazz, and avant-garde experimentation. The album attempted to capture the feeling of a Los Angeles subculture that mixed R&B, doo-wop, and sound collage - the so-called"freak" movement. The radical rock sound that resulted propelled the Mothers of Invention - and lead singer Frank Zappa - to greater infamy.
