The third album from Detroit-based funk band Funkadelic, Maggot Brain was the final album for many of the band's members. As a result, the album ends up as a mix of different funk stylings, loosely bound together by bandleader George Clinton. Originally the backing band of sister-group The Parliaments, Funkadelic was initially spun-off to allow Clinton room to experiment with a more psychedelic sound.
But Maggot Brain is far from a minor work from Funkadelic. In fact, it features work from guitarist Eddie Hazel that has been called some of his absolute best by music historian Bob Gulla. Alongside Funkadelic and Free Your Mind..., Maggot Brain is considered part of a formative trio of albums combining funk with a more dance-focused beat.
