The Grateful Dead is a legendary American Rock band. Formed in Palo Alto, California in 1965, the band’s sound fused rock and roll, jazz, avant-garde and folk music. Founding members were lead vocalist and guitarist Jerry Garcia, vocalist and rhythm guitarist Bob Weir, keyboardist Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, bassist and vocalist Phil Lesh and drummer Bill Kreutzmann. The band toured constantly through decades of performances, playing more than 2,300 concerts and growing a sense of community among their fans, who called themselves “Deadheads” and often followed The Dead to their concert venues for months on end.
The ”dancing terrapins” first appeared on the cover of their album Terrapin Station, released in 1977. They were designed by Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse, who also inked the band’s Skull and Roses design. The Terrapin Moon design features the band’s iconic Dancing Bear and four dancing terrapins frolicking with the moon.
