Black Grateful Dead Shirt
The Grateful Dead closed the doors on their own record label in 1977, but not before publishing Steal Your Face, their final release on Grateful Dead Records. The album featured performances recorded over a three-day span at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom in 1974, released as a double LP in 1976.
The“Steal Your Face” Lightning Skull artwork — now a piece of Grateful Dead lore — was originally designed by Owsley Stanley as a stencil to mark the band’s equipment cases. Owsley wanted to create something visually distinctive so the band could track their gear, but clearly he was on to something bigger. The red and blue were meant to be contrasting colors, while the lightning bolt was another way to quickly pick out the emblem. It’s only fitting something created to help manage their equipment would go on to become one of their best designs.
