Black Joy Division Shirt
Joy Division was formed in Salford in 1976. The group was comprised of vocalist Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner(guitarist/keyboardist), Peter Hook(bassist), and Stephen Morris(drummer). Formed after Sumner and Hook attended a Sex Pistols concert, Joy Division was heavily influenced by early punk and they soon pioneered a sound that made them the pioneers of the post-punk and gothic rock movements.
The band was plagued by Curtis’ personal problems to include a failing marriage, depression, and epilepsy. As their popularity grew, Curtis’ condition made it difficult for him to perform. Joy Division’s second and final album, Closer, was posthumously released two months after Curtis’ suicide and its single“Love Will Tear Us Apart” became their highest-charting release. The album art features a photo by Bernard Pierre Wolff and features a beautifully carved tombstone situated in the Staglieno Cemetery in Genova, Northern Italy.
