The iconic photo featured on the cover of Led Zeppelin’s 1969 debut album, depicts the tragic final flight of the German airship Hindenburgas it burst into flame over the Naval Air Station in Lakehurst, New Jersey in 1937. This photograph, one of the most widely circulated of the disaster, was taken by Sam Shere almost as soon as the fire started. However, it is not the only photo of the disaster that exists, in fact there is also newsreel footage of the incident.
Yet Shere’s photograph was an appropriate image to represent the band Jimmy Page formed from the ashes of the Yardbirds, and it paired well with the band’s new name, legendarily coined by the Who’s drummer Keith Moon. Led Zeppelin the album, which was soon to be followed by three more numbered sequels, quickly launched the British heavy rockers into“The Biggest Band in the World,” with riff-rocking songs like“Good Times Bad Times” and“Communication Breakdown.”
