The brothers Kirkwood—Curt, and Cris—along with Derrick Bostrom on drums, influenced a generation of alternative rock bands with their melodic, fuzzed-out hooks. Part of punk label SST’s roster in the 1980s, Meat Puppets’ sound evolved throughout the‘80s and‘90s, incorporating country, western, and psychedelic guitar rock, eventually finding crossover commercial success with 1994’s Too High to Die and the single“Backwater.”
With Curt and Cris guesting on Nirvana’s immortal MTV Unplugged session—recorded versions of their songs“Plateau,”“Lake of Fire,” and“Oh, Me”—Meat Puppets cemented their legacy in the rock canon. After a seven-year hiatus, the Kirkwood brothers reunited in 2007 and have released five studio albums, including 2019’s Dusty Notes.
