Over just a five-year span, Mott the Hoople, led by singer-songwriter Ian Hunter, recorded seven studio albums and helped establish the 1970s’ glam rock scene—alongside musicians like David Bowie, Roxy Music, Slade, and T. Rex. The band’s recording of Bowie’s“All the Young Dudes” reached #3 in their home country.
The Hoople(1974) is the final album recorded with Hunter and the only one Mott the Hoople recorded without founding guitarist Mick Ralphs. It’s a maximalist production, with showpiece singles like“The Golden Age of Rock‘n’ Roll” and“Roll Away the Stone” that epitomize the band’s larger-than-life sound. The model on the album’s cover, Kari-Ann Muller, is also featured on Roxy Music’s self-titled debut.
