There are few“bands of a generation” and Nirvana is certainly among them. Fronted by the angsty lyricism of Kurt Cobain, the band rocketed up the 90s charts into music stardom - whether they liked it or not. Nirvana’s third and final studio album, In Utero, was a culmination of lessons learned on the previous two albums. Recording in the seclusion of Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, MN allowed Cobain and the band to expand their songwriting in intimate settings.
In Utero contained a heady supply of fresh Nirvana songs for fans, including“Dumb,” which features what Cobain considered a lighter side of the band. In public, Cobain maintained that the song is a critique of those who’ve given up life for a dumb, happy status quo. But in private, those close to Cobain reckon that“Dumb” features the singer grappling with his own drug use. Whatever the heart behind the lyrics,“Dumb” remains in the pantheon of Nirvana’s greats.

Handwritten lyrics from Nirvana’s“Dumb”
I’m not like them / but I can pretend / The sun is gone / but I have a light / The day is done / but I’m having fun / I think I’m dumb / or maybe just happy / Think I’m just happy
