Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged set, recorded on November 18, 1993 at Sony Music Studios in New York City, is one of the rare, single performances that is inseparable from the artist’s legacy. The special received significant airtime on MTV after Cobain’s death in 1994, and went on to become an outstanding commercial success as an album. Yet it is Cobain’s unique artistic vision for the performance that makes it stand out 25 years later.
Nirvana left some of their more radio-friendly hits off of the set list, which instead featured six cover songs, like David Bowie’s“The Man Who Sold the World,” The Vaselines’“Jesus Don’t Want Me for a Sunbeam,” and three songs by the Meat Puppets. For the stripped down set, Nirvana also included an expanded version of the classic trio that featured Pat Smear on guitar and Lori Goldston on cello, as well as help from Meat Puppets’ own Cris and Curt Kirkwood as guest musicians for their own songs.
