When Nirvana’s second studio album, Nevermind, hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts in 1991, the Seattle band’s iconic, blissed-out smiley face t-shirt helped to launch grunge fashion across malls and campuses everywhere. Add some plaid and a pair of Dr. Martens and you’re all set to mosh along to“Smells Like Teen Spirit” and“Come as You Are” in the quad.
Designed by Kurt Cobain, Nirvana’s late frontman, the Official Nirvana Smiley logo debuted as part of a flyer for the band’s Nevermind record release party at Seattle’s Re-bar on September 13th, 1991. Cobain was an avid visual artist whose work was also used on the cover of Nirvana’s compilation album Incesticide and“Lithium” single.
