2112 was the fourth album released by the Canadian rock band Rush. After finishing its Caress of Steel tour, the band fell on hard times – empty seats at shows and negative press for their album put them in danger of being dropped by their label, Mercury Records. Rush’s band manager negotiated one more record, and 2112 changed everything in 1976. Fans and music critics alike took to the new album, which peaked at No. 61 on the Billboard charts and paved the way for a U.S. tour later that year.
Instead of going with a commercial approach, the album is split into seven complex sections, each one telling a piece of the tale. The opening track“2112 Overture / The Temples of Syrinx / Discovery” is nearly 20 minutes long. Inspired by the dystopian writings of Ayn Rand, 2112 is a futuristic tale about a galaxy-wide war that ends with“Priests of the Temple of Syrinx” controlling every facet of life – songs, art, and the written word. The“Man in the Star” cover art represents the abstract man against collectivist thought. 2112 is an all-time classic record, laying the foundation for progressive rock for generations.
